The Training System
This is the blueprint for how I train. Dog trainers essentially aim to do two things: increase a behavior and decrease a behavior. Providing reinforcement for desired behaviors increases the dog’s likelihood of offering that behavior over time, such as sitting nicely or staying on a place. Adding punishment for unwanted behaviors decreases the likelihood of those behaviors, such as jumping or pulling.
Most of us understand reinforcement, but the word punishment is where things get cloudy. Punishment refers to a decrease in behavior due to something the dog doesn’t want or like. What this looks like here at Living Proof K9 Training is providing fair consequences, such as leash corrections, verbal cues, displacement, and body pressure, among others. I believe that, in good training, it’s perfectly normal for a dog to experience a certain amount of discomfort if it makes them more resilient and adds value to the learning experience. As my favorite dog training coach says “No one gets out of this thing called life without some hardship.” Meaning, your dog shouldn’t be excused from fair consequences, especially when they're wreaking havoc in your life.
At the beginning of the training process, I believe it’s important to use food to show the dog the behaviors we want, and then, when we correct, they understand it better. I believe dogs need valuable life experiences and a handler who leads first and loves second.
Balanced Dog Training.
Communication.
I understand that getting your dog to listen consistently is one of the biggest challenges of dog ownership. My process simplifies training so you can confidently take your dog anywhere, knowing they will respond to your commands. Without effective communication, dogs often work against their owners instead of with them. I teach owners how to communicate effectively with their dogs and maintain the right energy.
My training philosophy focuses on developing calm, obedient dogs who respond reliably in any situation. Core skills include impulse control and the ability to settle - foundations that carry through all my training services. We work on establishing boundaries and manners both inside and outside the home, ensuring these behaviors transfer to all environments. Mastering leash work is essential, as it creates a vital communication channel between you and your dog.
Building a healthy relationship with your dog can start today. When your dog becomes more responsive and well-behaved, both you and your pet will enjoy a happier life together.
Exercise and Fun
Exercise is a crucial component that must be implemented alongside training, as dogs have specific physical needs based on their breed and drive level. While exercise requirements vary - some dogs thrive with intense activity while others need only moderate exercise - physical activity and training work together to create a well-balanced dog. Daily walks are essential for every dog's development, helping them explore the world and build confidence while maintaining calmness. I structure training sessions to be both engaging and fun, providing mental and physical stimulation for a complete learning experience.
